Crude as they were, these letter cutouts were high-maintenance pieces, as repeated presses wore out the edges of the letters until they were no longer legible. It also required a certain level of skill to operate the presses, making it more of an expensive art form rather than a regular means of communication. Surprisingly (but perhaps due to lack of alternatives), this form of printing lasted for hundreds of years, from 220AD to the ninth century.
Fortunately, moveable type appeared around 1040, and it revolutionized the printing industry. Metal stamps were far more durable than wood, were easier to use and maintain, and produced copies at rates that would break traditional woodblock prints. And since lower maintenance costs meant lower-priced end products, mass-production of books, newspapers, and pamphlets began, and the printing industry made a very important thing affordable to the masses: knowledge.
To say that printing changed our history is an understatement. Paper money became the standard of civilized trade, the Bible which used to be accessible only to Church officials became available to the masses, and the newspaper was born. Moveable type made history books — literally and figuratively.
