KARNATAKA ROAD DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION LIMITED

Details of Various projects taken up by KRDCL

The Government has constituted “Karnataka Road Development Corporation Ltd” vide Government order No.PWD 172 CRM 97 dated 01-06-1999 and this was established on 21st July 1999 as a wholly owned Government of Karnataka enterprises.

The structure and the role of the Corporation is as detailed below:

  1. The Corporation is established under Companies Act, 1956 (Sl.No.of 196 (56) as a Public Limited Company wholly owned by Government of Karnataka and is under the administrative control of the Public Works Department.
  2.  The Corporation will take up development programme for Roads, Bridges and other related infrastructure development works connected with surface transport.
  3. The Corporation has its Registered Office at Bangalore.
  4. The Corporation has an initial Authorized Share Capital of Rs.200.00 crores.  The initial paid up capital of Rs.10.00 crores will be subscribed in cash.
  5. The Corporation functions under the supervision and control of the Board of Directors.

Source of funding / Income for the Road Development Corporation.

  1. Budgetary provisions for specific projects.
  2. Toll collections on roads transferred to Corporation by State Government.
  3. Grant-in Aid received from the Government.
  4. Levy of Tax / duty for provision of infrastructure facilities.

The State Government guarantees the repayment of any loans and payment of interest on all or any of the loans/ borrowings of the Corporation etc.
Projects for Implementation under Karnataka Road Development Corporation Limited:
The Karnataka Road Development Corporation Limited has taken up various projects for implementation by raising funds from financial institutions such as HUDCO.  It has already raised Rs.702 Crores loan from HUDCO.

 Construction of 147 Bridges (Phase- I):

Under Phase – I KRDCL has taken up construction of 147 bridges on State Highways and Major District Roads of Karnataka. The work was entrusted to M/s Mecon Ltd., on total responsibility basis. The physical work commenced in the month of October 2000 and all the 147 Bridges have been completed.  Out of 147 bridges 36 bridges were constructed with pre-cast technology in which elements were casted at yards and assembled at site which saved the construction time.  The total cost of the Project is Rs. 110 crores.  The bridge constructed across Hemavathi river in Holenarasipura town has bagged 2nd best prize in PCC Superstructure in the event of National awards for bridge-2001.

Maintenance of State Highways for 3 years (2001-2004):

The project of Maintenance of State Highways in all the 27 divisions of PWD is for a period of 3 years and for a length of 7327 Kms at an estimated cost of Rs.219 Crores.  For each PWD Division, there was one contract. The work includes, Jungle Clearance, Berm Cutting, Clearance of Side Drains  potholes filling, Profile correction and Re-surfacing in selected reaches and to keep the road pot hole free for three years.  Three years maintenance in all 27 divisions completed. Under this scheme 3445 Km have been resurfaced.

Merits of the Scheme:

  1. Accountability of contractor for 3 years.
  2. Cost per Km is less than that of regular maintenance
  3. Better quality by using modern equipments and machinery
  4. Better monitoring

The resurfacing of Kodagu and Koppal division roads also have been taken up as special packages in February 2004 and completed.

Widening and Strengthening of Bilikere-Belur Road:

This project is to widen and strengthen 119 Kms length of the above road out of 127 Kms and to make the road 2 lane carriage way with earthen shoulders.  The total estimated cost of

project is Rs.119 crores.  There are 275 structures along the project road which are to be renovated and 111 curves taken up for improvements. There are 2 major bridges for construction across Laxmanatheertha and Cauvery River. This work is taken up in 4 Packages.

The work of Package-I i.e., Bilikere-Bherya of 38.60 Km at tendered cost of Rs.39.59 Crores is commenced during Feb-2004 and completed.  The work of Package-2 i.e. 45.40 kms from Bherya town to Beherya (BB-2) at a tendered cost of  Rs.28.49 crores has commenced in June 2002 and is completed. The work of package-3 from Hassan to Belur (BB-3) awarded at a tendered cost of Rs.26.43 Crores in May 2003 and is completed. Construction of two major bridges under Package 4 (BB-4) at a contract amount of Rs.15.79 has commenced in June-2005 and are completed.

Widening and Strengthening of Jewargi-Bijapur Road

This project of 119 Kms is to provide 2 lane carriageway with earthen shoulders and construction of By-pass at Sindagi Town of 6.5 Km length. The estimated cost of  the project is Rs. 116 Crores.  It is proposed to reconstruct 2 major bridges, 36 minor bridges and 64 culverts. The work is taken up in 4 Packages.

The works of Package-I (JB1) from Jewargi to Mortgi of 36.80 kms at a tendered cost of Rs. 26.49 Crores has commenced in June 2002 and completed during October 2004.  The works of Package-2 (JB–2) from Moratgi to Sindagi is awarded in May-2003 at a tendered cost of Rs.18.72 Crores and completed during November 2005. The work of Package-3 (JB-3) of 31 Km at a cost of Rs. 36.90 Crores has completed except 300 mtr of Sindgi bypass road.
Package-4 (JB-4) of 29 Km at a cost of Rs.29.41Cores commenced during December 2003 and completed during August-2005.

Construction of Gulbarga Ring Road: 

In this project it is proposed to provide 4 lane divided carriage way with Service Roads on the existing alignment for 1st phase and new alignment for phase II.

The Gulbarga ring road Phase-I is taken up in 2 Stages. The work of Stage I, Phase - I of 9.9 kms from Aland junction to Shabad junction at a tendered cost of Rs.13.99 Crores has commenced in June 2002 and work is completed during March 2004.  The work of stage II of length 4.6 km i.e. Shabad Road Junction to Jewargi Road Junction is awarded in May 2003 at a tender cost of Rs.6.52 crores and the work completed during February 2005.  
Under Phase-II, 8 Km length of road from Jewargi Road Junction to Aland Road Junction is proposed and tendering under process.

Four-laning of Bangalore - Mysore Road:

Bangalore – Mysore Road was a 2 lane State Highway of 141 Kms length.  It is now upgreaded to 4 lane divided Highway. 
The effective length of the project is 111 km excluding the already developed stretches of road in Ramanagar, Chennapatna and Mandya Town limits.   The total estimated cost of this project is Rs. 330.00 Crores. It is upgraded 4 lane carriageway with 2.10 mtr median and 2.50 mtr. earthen shoulder on either side.

Package-I from Bangalore to Maddur 62.5 Km road at an estimated cost of Rs.188.00 crores is awarded on Annuity basis. Work of this package started in March 2004 and completed during June 2006.  
The work of Package-II i.e., from Maddur to Mysore for a length of 49 Km  is awarded at a tender cost of Rs.116.21 and the work commenced during March 2004 and completed during June 2006 .

Widening and strengthening of Mysore - Buntwal Road:

The total length of road proposed for improvement is 220 Km.  The total estimated cost of this project is Rs.266.00 Crores.
Under this scheme it is proposed to construct 4 lane road from Mysore to Bilikere cross and balance length it is proposed reconstruct 2 lane carriageway with earthen shoulders.  It is proposed to provide two lane 7.00 mtr carriageway with 2.50 m earthen shoulder on both sides of the carriageway for most part of the road. This work is proposed to be taken up in 3 packages

The work of Package-A for a length of 86.66 Km is awarded at a tender cost of Rs.103.96 Crores and work commenced on 23.05-2005 and under progress. 
The work of Package-B for a length of 60.20 km is awarded at a tender cost of Rs.97.25 Crores and work commenced on 25-10-2006 and under progress.  
It is proposed to take up the work under Package- C for length of 71.90 at an estimated cost of Rs.70.54 crores.  Tendering under process.

Improvements to MC Road in Mandya Town:

The existing Madras– Cannanoor road of 7.5 Km length in Mandya town is taken up for improvement.  The work is awarded at a tendered cost of Rs. 4.30 Crores and completed.

Construction of Hemagiri Bridge and Mavinahalla bridge:

A major bridge of 267.00 m length across river Hemavathi at Hemagiri near Bandihole village of K.R. Pet taluk which was half-done and discontinued by National Highway under NABARD Scheme was entrusted to KRDCL for completion. The work of Hemagiri Bridge is awarded at a tender cost of Rs. 4.00 crores. The work started during January 2003 and completed during December 2003. The work of construction of Mavinahalla Bridge is awarded at a cost of   Rs.2.11 Crores. The bridge with approaches and Khar-land scheme is completed.

Improvements to approach road to the bridge across Doodganga river between Sadalga & Dattawada in Chikkodi Tqluk – 6 Kms:

Improvements to 6 Kms length of approach road to the bridge across Doodganga river between Sadalga & Dattawada in Chikkodi Tqluk is taken up at a tendered cost of Rs.0.99 Crores.  The work is completed.

Improvements to Waghdhari – Ribbanapalli Road:

Improvements to Waghdhari-Ribbanaplli State Highways–10 from Chainage Km 99.20 to Km 106.00 in Sedam Taluk is taken up at a tendered cost of Rs. 2.44 Crores.  The work is completed.

Improvements to Kadur-Buntwal and Subramanya – Dharmasthala - Udupi Road:

Kadur-Buntwal road from Chainage 124.80 to 144.97 Km and Subramanya – Udupi road from chainage 31.50 to 61.67 Km in Buntwal Taluk have been taken up for improvements at a tendered cost of Rs. 2.37Crores.  The work is completed.

 Improvements to Wadi – Raichur Road:

       Improvements to existing Raichur–Wadi road of 88.00 Km length is taken up with partial Financial assistance from cement companies. Under this scheme it is proposed to provide 7 mts carriageway with 1.5 mts wide earthen shoulders.  The estimated amount of this work is Rs. 77.00 Crores.  Out of this Rs.25.00 Crores is contributed by the three cement companies i.e., ACC, Rajashree and Vasava Datta Cements.  Balance Rs.33.00 Crores is provided by the Government.  This work is taken up in two packages.

The works of package I from Wadi to Yadgiri of 41 kms is divided in to two sub packages.  The works of Package 1A i.e. Wadi to Nalwar i.e Ch. 0 Km to 15 Km is under progress and   package 1B from Nalwar to Yadgir i.e. Ch 15 Km to 41 Km is commenced in Feb-2004 and completed during March 2007.
The works of Package 2 from Yadgir to AP Border of 47 kms at a tendered cost of Rs.35.59 Crores has commenced in February 2004 and completed during February 2006.

Improvements to Gadag-Ron-Badami Road

Improvements to existing Gadag–Ron–Badami is taken up.  The total length of the road taken up for improvement is 72.40 Km and the estimated cost of this work is Rs.58.00Crores.  Under this scheme it is proposed to provide 7.00 m wide carriageway with 2.5 m earthen shoulders.  This road is taken up in two packages.

The works of Package 1 from Gadag to Ron of 40.60 kms at a tendered cost of Rs.30.75 Crores has commenced in February 2004 and completed during June 2006. 
Package -II is taken up in 2 sub packages. Package A i.e. 10 km length at a contract amount of Rs.4.73 is commenced in March 2004 and completed during March 2007.  Package B i.e. 21.80 Km at a contract amount of Rs.23.42 Crores is commenced in June 2005 and completed during December 2006.

Improvements to Tamilnadu-Andhra Pradesh border road:

A portion of the state highway Tamilnadu-Andhra Pradesh border road of 31.00 Km length between Kanakapura & Ramnagar which is in distressed condition is taken up for improvement at contract amount of Rs.10.12 Crores in 2 packages and the works are completed.

Improvements and Strengthening of Shahapur-Sindhagi Road:

Existing Shahapur-Sindagi road is taken up for improvements and strengthening.  The total length of road taken up for improvement is 5 Kms.  The contract amount of this work is Rs.1.83 crores and the work is completed.

Improvements to AP Border – Shahapur Road

It is proposed to take up improvements to AP Border –Shahapur Road in Gulbarga district. This road is a connectivity road between Hyderabad and Bijapur which are historically important places. Existing road is consists of single lane and intermediate lane carriageway.  Now it is proposed to widen this road to 2 lane carriage way of 7.00 m width with 2.50 m earthen shoulders on both sides.  It is proposed to reconstruct 41 culverts and 15 minor bridges and widening of 34 culverts and 3 minor bridges. The total length of the road taken up for improvement is 84.35 Km and estimated cost for improvement is Rs.86.00 crores. This work is taken up in 2 packages.

The works of Package-1 from A.P. Border (Medak) to Ramasamudra of 45.95 kms at a tendered cost of Rs.51.06 Crores has commenced in May 2005 and works are under progress.
The works of Package-2 from Yadgir to Shahapur of 38.40 kms at a tendered cost of Rs.56.23 Crores has commenced in October 2006 and works are under progress. 

Construction of Bye-Pass road to Holenarasipura Town

Improvements to Bilikere- Belur road is taken up by KRDCL. The portion of the road under Package 2 i.e. from Bherya to Hassan which passes through Holenarasipura town is already completed. It is proposed to provide bye-pass road at Holenarasipura town. The length of the road is 2.40 Km and cost of the work is Rs.2.27 crores.   The work is awarded at a tender cost of Rs.2.27 crores and commenced during November-2004.  The work is under progress.

Construction of bridges under Phase-II:

Government vide G.O. No.PWD 9 EAP 2005 Bangalore, Dated 19-02-2005 has been issued to take up construction of 366 bridges at an estimated cost of Rs.197.40 Crores by KRDCL under II phase of bridge programme.

Construction of 265 bridges, costing more than 25 lakhs amounting to Rs.178.88 crores are taken up by KRDCL in 4 packages.  This work is awarded to M/s Nagarjuna Construction Co. Ltd and M/s Gammon India Ltd 2 packages each and the agencies have to complete all the bridges within

3 years. Construction of 105 bridges costing less than Rs.25 lakhs at an estimated cost of Rs.18.00 crores are being executed by Public Works Department.

Maintenance of State Highway  for the period of 2005-2008

Government vide G.O. No. PWD 10 EAP 2004, Bangalore dated 24-12-2004 has been issued to take up state highway maintenance for a further period of three years i.e. 2005-2008.  The total length of State Highway proposed to be taken up for maintenance is 14,500 Km and the sanctioned amount is Rs.458 Crores.  This work is taken up 57 packages in 27 divisions. The works for all the 57 packages are under progress.

Construction of bridges under Phase-III:

Government vide G.O. No. PWD 51 EAP 2005, Bangalore dated 23-01-2005 has been issued to take up construction of 360 bridges at an estimated cost of Rs.210 Crores by KRDCL under III phase of bridge programme.
Construction of 218 bridges, costing above 25 lakhs amounting to Rs.183.17 crores is taken up by KRDCL in 4 packages.  This work is awarded to M/s Nagarjuna Construction Co. Ltd and M/s Gammon India Ltd 2 packages each and the agencies have to complete all the bridges in a period of 3 years. 142 bridges costing less than Rs.25.00 lakhs at an estimated cost of Rs.26.83 crores are being executed by Public Works Department. 

Improvement to Bangalore-Mysore road in Ramanagara-Channapattana and Mandya town limit:

While 4 laning of Bangalore-Mysore road portion of roads in Ramanagara, Channapattana and Mandya were not considered.  Now improvements to the portion road is town limit are taken up, the length of road taken up for improvement in Ramanagara and channapattana town limit is 8.3 km and estimated cost is Rs.13.68 crores and completed.  In Mandya town limit the length is 4.05 Km at an estimated cost is Rs.12 Crores. This work is are under progress.

Improvements to Curves on Bilikere-Belur road:

The improvement to curves in Bilikere-Belur road at a Contract amount Rs.2.81 crores is taken up and the works are nearing completion.

Improvements to Channarayapattana- Holenarasipura-Arakalgud road:

The work of improvements to Channarayapattna-Holenarasipura-Arakalgud road is an important road, which connects NH-48 and SH-21 starts at Km 28.51 via Holenarasipura and ends at Arakalgud town.  The said highway is having single/intermediate carriageway it is proposed to widen to 7 mtr carriage way with 2.5 mtrs side shoulders on either side. 
The Improvements to 44 km length of Channarayapattana- Holenarasipura-Arakalgud road is taken up at an estimated cost of Rs.54.20 crores.  The work is under progress.

Improvements to road from Belgaum-Chorla road via Peeranawadi-Jamboti road

 The Improvements to 42 km length of Belgaum-Chorla road via Peeranawadi-Jamboti road is taken up at an estimated cost of Rs.69 Crores.  The letter of intent is issued to agency.

Construction of Grade Separater at Kengeri on Bangalore - Mysore road

The construction of a Grade Separator is taken up on Bangalore-Mysore road near Kengeri town at an contract amount of Rs.22.99 Crores. The work is commenced on May-20006 and is under progress.

Construction of bridges under Phase-IV:

Government vide G.O. No. PWD 37 EAP 2006, BANGALORE, DATED.26.4.2007 has been issued to take up construction of 459 bridges at an estimated cost of Rs.284 Crores by KRDCL under IV phase of bridge programme. The tendering is under process
