GULBARGA RING ROAD PROJECT

Gulbarga is located in the North-Eastern region of Karnataka. The population of the city is at present approximately 300,000.

Six state highways radiate from the city, dividing the Ring road into six segments between the radials:

SH19 to the North towards Homnabad (NH9) and Bidar
SH19 to the South towards Shahpour and Bellary
SH10 to the West towards Solapur (NH9) and Mumbai
SH10 to the East towards Sedam and Hyderabad
SH22 to the Southwest towards Afzalpur · SH15 to the Southeast towards Afzalpur
SH15 to the South east towards Shahabad and Yadgir

Gulbarga is a station on the main Mumbai – Chennai railway line.

A number of heavy industries are located mainly southeast of Gulbarga including cement factories and stone quarries. The land in the district is generally arable and agricultural production is significant. Gulbarga has a tourist potential in the Fort and other historical monuments dating back to the 14th century. This potential is at present largely undeveloped.

The Ring Road project was started in 1971 – 72, and by 1991 the northern half of the ring was completed as a two-lane road, linking the two radials of SH10 and the northern radial of SH19. The southern ring was also planned for construction, but as the land was not acquired in the southwestern section, road was not built and development has spread over the proposed alignment.

The two northern segments, which have now been in service for 10 years or more, are now wthin the developed area of the city, and development is in progress in the two southern segments also.

It is now proposed to strengthen and widen the existing stretches of the Ring road .Certain stretches require land acquisition. After land acquisition the road will be formed to uniform standards.Survey work on the project is on.

The work on Gulbarga Ring Road -I Phase (9.9 Km) is taken up at a cost of Rs.14 Crores which has been entrusted to M/s. Backbone Projects Ltd,Mumbai. The work is started in the month of June 2002 and expected to be completed by September 2003.
