1.
INTRODUCTION
Bijapur and Gulbarga are the two important and prosperous districts in
the state of Karnataka requiring adequate and quality connectivity to
boost their further economic and social upliftment. The Jevargi-Bijapur
road is one of the two links comprised
by the road connecting these two
important district centres, the other being the section
of SH-19 between
Gulbarga and Jevargi (being developed as a part of KSHIP).
2.
PROJECT
LOCATION
The Jevargi-Bijapur road is a segment of SH-12, taking off from SH-19,
at Jevargi (km 0/000, 40 km from south of Gulbarga), traverses
westward vide villages namely Mahal
Bhagoyat , Shivanagi, Hadagali, Devara Hippagi ,
Kannavali , Sindgi , Moratagi , Jeratgi , Mandelwal
and terminates on NH 13
(at km 119/200) just east of Bijapur.

CHARACTERISTICS
OF PROJECT ROAD
The Jevargi - Bijapur road falls generally
in plain terrain. The existing
carriageway is of either single or intermediate lane configuration
except the stretch between km 61/000 to 62/000 where it is two lane. The
shoulders are of earthen with width varying between 1.5m to 2.5m. For
most of the length of project road the height of embankment is equal to
or less than 1.0m. There are number of junctions along the road but two
(existing at the termini) amongst are of significant in nature. The
pavement condition is poor. Most of the road is distressed
with cracking , patching, potholing, heaving and edge breaks. The project road
was initially single lane in the stretches presently having intermediate
lane carriageway. The shoulder condition is very poor, predominantly
having ditches and shoulder drop. In general, the soil along the road
traverses is mainly clayey type. Weathered and hard rock is available at
shallow depths. The road predominantly has a straight alignment. Most of
the curves conform to IRC recommendations.
The traffic intensity on the road is
less which may mainly be due to
its poor condition. The traffic (ADT) along the road
is in the order of 3000
to 8000 PCU comprising predominantly commercial traffic. Number of
animal drawn vehicles are also seen near the settlements.
There are 74 C-D structures which include 21 bridges (major and minor),
20 arch and slab culverts and 33 pipe culverts. Most of the structures
are having cut stone masonry substructure and RCC super structure or
pipes and need repairs and rehabilitation
. Most of the structures may
need to be widened to suit the proposed improvement.
This belt falls in water scarcity
area of Karnataka. This area receives rainfall from the South West monsoon between June and September
months. A large number of natural streams are crossing the road which
also include irrigation canals. The predominant
landuse along the road
is agriculture. There are no major ponds and water
collection basins within 50m on either side the road. There are
a no. of trees existing
along the road which include Tamarind, Neem, Palash and local herbs
& shrubs.
Major portion of the road traverses
through rural areas with potential
agricultural fields. Few small settlements (mentioned above)
inhabiting kutcha, semi-pacca and pacca structures within as well as out side
ROW are also to be found along the road.
These are commercial and residential in nature. They may be
partially affected by the proposed improvement. Sindagi and Devar
Hippagi are the settlements where the congestion shall
be observed along
the road. Bypass has been proposed for Sindagi town to
ease the traffic flow. However, requirement of bypass for Devar Hippagi would be
explored.
SH 12, Jevargi – Bijapur Road , is part of a road link connecting the District centres Gulbarga
and Bijapur. The distance between the two towns is 165 Km, of which
the project road makes up 120 Km. An alternative route of 209 kms runs
from Gulbarga via Homnabad, NH-9, to Solapur and via NH-13 to Bijapur.
